Over the past few months, a question has arisen about whether the Board of County Commissioners will provide the funding needed to keep the completion of Milwaukie Bay Park moving forward. The City of Milwaukie has spent millions of dollars on this regional park over the past two decades, and committed another million to finishing the park.

Since the extensive public engagement process in 2018-19 which led to the final design, adding an amphitheater, play and picnic areas, and other features, where today we have a large, little-used lawn, the plan has called for the County Commissioners, acting as the board for the North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District (NCPRD), to fund over $5million dollars from system development charges and Metro bond funds (not from the NCPRD budget) toward completion of the park.

Now that January recommendation has been forwarded to the Board of County Commissioners (the BCC), who are expected to vote this Wednesday, March 30th, on whether to go forward with that funding commitment. We need your help again to demonstrate to County Commissioners the widespread support for this regional amenity.

The good news? If you wrote in before, you can just repurpose your previous message, and send it to the County Commissioners at BCC@clackamas.us. Our only suggestion would be that you add a sentence noting that the District Advisory Committee expressed overwhelming support for completing Milwaukie Bay Park.

If you didn't submit comments previously, you can see some background on the project and suggested points to make here: https://www.milwaukieparksfoundation.org/urgent-action-mbp. Just write a few sentences and email them to BCC@clackamas.us by noon on Wednesday.

It is unclear whether the County Commissioners will take oral testimony (via Zoom) at the Wednesday meeting, but we encourage those who can do so to tune in at 6pm Wednesday and be prepared to give a short (1-3 minute) comment in support of completing Milwaukie Bay Park. Milwaukie Bay Park is a crucial regional amenity that has been in the works for over 20 years!
